Dear Denture Patient:
It is normal to compare your old denture to your new one. They are going to feel different. Also, the gum material might feel bulky. This feeling of too much will not last as you get used to your denture.
How often should your denture be checked?
At first, you can expect to have about three adjustment appointments. After these are adjusted, you should have your denture checked every 2-4 years.
How long should your denture last?
A well-constructed denture may last a long number of years. However, your mouth is made of living tissue. As time goes by, your mouth tissue changes. Your dentures remain intact; they simply must be updated to match the new conditions in your mouth. If the changes are slight, the problem may be dealt with by relining them. Usually this has to be done every 2-3 years. Chances are that if you have worn your dentures more than 5-8 years, you are a candidate for new dentures.
How to care and clean your dentures?
The best way to clean your denture is with a soft toothbrush. You may use toothpaste. This should be done after meals and before bedtime. Whenever your take your dentures out, they should be kept moist. To remove tarter, soak the denture in a solution of half vinegar and half water. This will usually soften the tarter to a point where it can be brushed away. You should take your denture out at least four hours a day if possible. This is most conveniently done at bedtime. This allows the tissue to breath, as Mother Nature never designed the tissue to be covered.
