Advantages and Disadvantages

ADVANTAGES:

  1. The patient is never without teeth, thus does not have to meet family and friends in an edentulous state.
  2. The denture acts as a bandage to help control bleeding and thus promotes rapid healing of the extraction sites.
  3. Most patients regain adequate function in speech and chewing much sooner than if they are without teeth for awhile.
DISADVANTAGES:
  1. Greater initial expense and a need for a hard reline or possibly a remake after the healing period is over.
  2. More office visits for adjustments at first.
  3. A hard reline is usually needed after the 6 month healing period.
  4. The possibility of having to remake the denture after 6months, due to excess initial resorpton of bone and shrinkage of unhealed tissue following extractions exists.
